PhD in Human Movement Sciences



The University of Costa Rica and the National University thank you for your interest in our PhD program.

The PhD in Human Movement Sciences is an inter-university program between the University of Costa Rica and the Universidad Nacional.

Overall Objectives

  1. To develop a leader PhD program in human movement sciences at a Latin American scale due to the quality of the participating universities and the impact its graduates will have on the development of programs focused on promoting life quality through exercise and physical activity in their countries or to improve physical performance, in the context of sports performance or fitness training.

  2. To train professionals to obtain a PhD degree. Firstly, they have to end up with a proven capacity for scientific research in the field of human movement sciences, on the other hand, they have to leave with the knowledge and capacity to lead integral processes that promote the establishment of healthy lifestyles and therefore, the establishment of a somatic culture to encourage physical activity as a fundamental anthropological nutrient for the integral development of the human being.

Specific Objectives

  1. To promote and consolidate the development of a systemic vision of the world, as a basis for the development of disciplinary and interdisciplinary capabilities in the field of human movement sciences, also including an impact on the Latin American context.

  2. To promote the development of a scientific community at the highest level in Latin America in the different emphases of the human movement sciences PhD program.

  3. To enhance the development of the necessary skills taking advantage of advanced technological resources to guide educational intervention processes in the field of human movement sciences.

  4. To promote and reinforce the development of the necessary skills in the candidates of the PhD in human movement sciences for scientific research. Additionally by taking advantage of advanced technological resources,

  5. To support the strengthening of the process of the institutional-academic change-over of the universities participating in the PhD program.

  6. To develop and enhance the skills required for the management and administration of scientific projects in the area of human movement sciences; additionally by applying advanced information and communication technologies.

  7. To integrate the efforts of two Costa Rican and one European university in the development of an academic PhD in human movement sciences, with impact at the Latin American scale.
